Tell Us Your Library Story

Libraries are wonderful places! They are always new, always changing, always challenging us. There are so many stories to tell about our love of the library. Here's mine:

I've worked in three kinds of libraries: a medical library in a hospital; an elementary school library; and now Glendale's Library. My first Library love, though, was the Brentwood Library. I spent many, many hours there as a kid and I was so proud of my library card. It was a plain little card that felt like a file folder and it had a little metal plate on it with my name imprinted there. I checked out all kinds of books to read on my own, to have my mother read to me, or to read myself to my younger brother.

One day at the Brentwood, I found a book with a marvelous title: Like Cotton Candy on a Rainy Day by Nikki Giovanni. It was a book of poetry. I took it home and started reading the poems and I was hooked. I liked the words, the way they felt in my mouth when I read them out loud, the way they looked on the page. Before long, I was writing my own poetry. As an adult I got the chance to see Nikki Giovanni in person at Missouri State University when she visited to read some of her poems. It was so awesome to see her after having met her all those years ago in a book I found at the library.

Your assignment: Choose one or two of the questions below and write the answers to them in a comment on this post. Remember, all of the directions for how to post a comment are given at the right of this page. Be sure to follow them exactly!

  1. What is your first good memory of a library? By Ian, Grade K, Hickory Hills.

Checking out a book at the library that I could read all by myself. I read it to my Mom three times. The book was "Biscuit Wants to Play"

  2. Ian, I'm so glad you did your homework! I love the Biscuit books, too! Visit the blog again sometime. You might even write a review of your favorite Biscuit book for our Book Reviews page on Falcons Off the Shelf! Now, that would be cool! Have a great weekend.

  3. I go to the library to check out books, magazines and movies. I also go to the library to eat lunch with my mom and dad :). The librarian helps me look up books on the computer and points me in the right direction to find it. Mitchell, 5th, Wilder

I go to the library because I LOVE to read and it's a great, cozy place to grab a book and read.

My first good memory of a library is walking in and seeing all the books and just standing there awed that there could be so many books in one place.

  5. Mitchell, isn't it great how moms and dads can help us learn to love libraries? My mom is a big, big part of why I love to read! Of course, when I was your age we didn't have computers :(

  8. Jake, I'm glad to know you use the library for homework and also to find things to do with your spare time. Have you tried Playaways? If not, they look like an iPod and they have someone reading the book out loud. It's really neat to get the Playaway and the book to match and read along with it. Try it sometime! Does your library at Hickory have Playaways?

  9. I like to visit the library because I can check out some really cool books. There are also computers that I can use to play games and to look-up books that I like. I also like seeing my friends at the library.

  11. I like the most about libraries are all the books. Funny books are my favorite. Story time is very fun too. Glendale had a lot of computers at the library, which is exciting.

  12. Hi, Lauren! Glendale does have a lot of computers and I imagine by the time you get here we'll have many, many more! Maybe every student will have a computer all to themselves to work on in classes and do homework on. Wouldn't that be great? I'm glad you like books. Funny books are a favorite of mine, too. What is your favorite funny book? Mine is Aliens Love Underpants by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort. I laugh every time I read it. If you visit the Falcons Off the Shelf page "Off the Shelf Reviews" you'll find that I even wrote about it and you can see a cover of the book! Thanks for doing your homework and be sure to write to us again on our blog!

  13. Why do you visit the library?

I like visit the library to check out new books. My sister reads magazines while I look for books with my mom.

How has a librarian helped you?

One day, I was looking for a book about Mark Twain that was supposed to be on the shelf but it wasn't. The librarian found the book for me because it had been misfiled. She was very nice to take her time to help me.

  14. Why do you visit the library?

I usually go to the libraby with my mom, brother and sister to check out books. I like to read Nicholas Sparks, so it doesn't usually take me long to pick out a book. I like to read magazines while I wait for my sister to get done finding her books.

  15. Hello, Brailyn! I like looking ag magazines, too. We have a lot of magazines at Glendale for you to enjoy before or after school or during your lunch period. We even will let you check out copies to take home. Unfortunately, sometimes books do get misplaced on the shelves, but it's great that you feel comfortable with the librarian to ask for her help. That's why we're here! Blog with us again sometime soon.

  16. Welcome to the blog, Jaden. Nicholas Sparks, huh? I'm glad you have a favorite author. It's nice to find someone who writes what you enjoy and know that whatever you pick up from that author is probably going to be a good book. We have several Nicholas Sparks books on the shelves at Glendale and they are very popular. If you like magazines, please look at what I wrote back to Brailyn (that comment should be right above this one). BTW, have you invited your sister to our blog yet? If she's going to be a Falcon someday, or if she's already a Glendale student, she's welcome to write on our blogs! Come again soon!
